Welcome to Donelson Heights United Methodist Church!
Our PANCAKE (MARDI GRAS) SUPPER was a huge success. Thanks
to everyone who came! Although
this is a fund raiser for the youth summer mission trip (cost
being $5 for 11 yrs and older, $3 for 10 yrs and younger), it is
a traditional part of the spiritual journey toward Easter.
New Orleans is not the birth place of “Mardi Gras” … the church
is! In many countries,
the last day before Lent (called Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday,
Carnival, or Fasching) has become a last fling before the
serious and solemn season of Lent.
For centuries, it was customary to fast by abstaining
from meat during Lent,
which is why some people call the festival Carnival,
which is Latin for farewell to meat.
Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. The forty days remind
us of Jesus time of soul searching in the wilderness.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is tomorrow.
We skip Sundays when we
count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the
Resurrection. So,
Lent this year, begins on February 17 and ends on April 3 ,
which is the day before Easter.
“Mardi Gras” or Fat Tuesday, is the day before Lent
begins.
Pancakes became the customary way to use up the “fat” in the
house so it would not be a temptation for the forty days of
Lent!
